In winter, when Tignes is in full swing and prices are soaring, some resorts continue to cultivate a different idea of the mountains. Simpler, more human, fairer. On the south shore of the lake, facing the frozen expanse and the peaks of the Vanoise Park, Le Terril Blanc is one of those rare refuges. A discreet hotel, on a human scale, that endures the seasons without ever denying its DNA.
The resort's only two-star hotel, open summer and winter, The hotel offers a privilege that has become almost unheard of in Tignes: a direct view of the lake, with no gimmicks or overkill.
In winter, the scenery changes. The turquoise blue gives way to a frozen surface, sometimes powdered with snow, where the light catches the balconies in the morning. It's a daily, silent spectacle that guests discover from their rooms or over breakfast.
A family history rooted in the resort
Le Terril Blanc is not just an address that has sprung up out of thin air. It was one of the very first buildings in the new resort. Built in 1967 by Béatrice Leclercq's parents, on land donated by her grandfather, the hotel is above all a story of transmission.
«It was a wedding present from our grandfather to our parents».» she says. «They ran it for thirty-three years, before it was rented out. My sister and I took it over in 2019, just before Covid.»
Since then, Béatrice has been running the business full-time, supported by her sister. A seamless takeover, in keeping with the original spirit. A simple welcome, without trying to compete with the sometimes impersonal standards of the big high-altitude hotels.
Winter, just like at home
Visit Terril Blanc, A cosy atmosphere in winter. The south-facing rooms all have balconies overlooking the lake. You come back after skiing, your face still pink from the cold, to find comfortable bedding, soft warmth and that rare feeling, in Tignes, of being expected.
«There aren't many two-star hotels here any more. We want to remain accessible.» insists Béatrice. Prices vary according to the time of year, but the spirit remains the same. Well-kept accommodation, a generous breakfast, and a welcome where regulars meet newcomers, where conversations flow naturally.

The hotel welcomes families as well as groups of skiers or couples looking for peace and quiet, away from the big snow fronts, but still connected to the life of the resort.
If Le Terril Blanc is proud of its simplicity, it's not stuck in the past. Every year, improvements are made in small steps. Double glazing, renovated terraces, thermostatic heads in the rooms, showers equipped with water consumption indicators: the hotel moves with the times, without losing its soul.
An address that's open even out of season
Behind the counter, the wood worked by Béatrice's father is still there. It's just one detail among many, but it says a lot about this desire to preserve the family heritage while reducing the environmental impact.
Unlike many establishments which close between two periods, Le Terril Blanc remains open for most of the year. In winter, this continuity makes it a real anchor point for those who come to Tignes in a different way, away from the peaks in visitor numbers.
In summer, the terrace comes alive thanks to a partnership with a restaurant just below. In winter, the calm returns. The frozen lake becomes the real luxury of this address: a living, changing landscape that you can observe day by day.
