Barcelonnette: Mexican heritage in the heart of the Alps

Nestling in the Ubaye valley, Barcelonnette is a small town in the Southern Alps with a surprisingly unique heritage: a surprising link with Mexico.

This charming commune attracts many visitors every year, intrigued by its unique history and atypical cultural influences. Between majestic mountains and Mexican traditions, Barcelonnette is a must-see destination for the curious and mountain lovers.

READ MORE: This mountain village is the highest inhabited community in Europe

The town's history dates back to the 19th century, when many inhabitants of the Ubaye valley emigrated to Mexico in search of better economic opportunities. These daring adventurers set off to set up businesses, particularly in textiles, in Mexico City and other towns. Over time, some of them managed to make a fortune and decided to return to their homeland.

This is how the famous Mexican villas of Barcelonnette came to be. Back home, these prosperous entrepreneurs built magnificent residences inspired by Mexican colonial architecture. These villas are distinguished by their colourful facades, lush gardens and exotic ornamental details, providing a striking contrast with the surrounding alpine landscape.

Today, Barcelonnette's Mexican heritage is not limited to its architecture. Every year, the town celebrates its Mexican festival, a colourful event that attracts visitors from all over France and beyond.

A cultural heritage and sporting activities

During this event, Barcelonnette is transformed into a small Mexican enclave: the streets come alive with folk dances, mariachi concerts and tastings of Mexican specialities. This festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the hospitality of the Ubaye people, while enjoying a warm and festive atmosphere.

As well as its cultural heritage, Barcelonnette is also a popular destination for outdoor activities. Situated close to the Mercantour National Park, the Ubaye valley is an ideal playground for hiking, mountain biking and winter sports enthusiasts. The surrounding mountains are a true paradise for those looking to recharge their batteries in the heart of nature.

Hikers can explore numerous signposted trails offering breathtaking views of Alpine peaks and verdant valleys. In winter, nearby ski resorts such as Pra Loup and Le Sauze welcome skiers of all abilities, promising memorable days on the snowy slopes.

Barcelonnette is much more than just a mountain village. It's a destination that tells the story of an extraordinary link between France and Mexico, a story of emigration, return and cultural sharing. Whether you're passionate about history, culture or outdoor adventure, Barcelonnette has something for everyone. Come and discover this nugget of the Alps and let yourself be seduced by its unique charm.
