Disengageable chairlifts are an advanced technology used in ski resorts to transport skiers and snowboarders to the top of the slopes.
They differ from fixed-grip chairlifts in their ability to slow down at the departure and arrival stations to make it easier for passengers to embark and disembark, while travelling at a higher speed along the route.
The heart of the disengageable system lies in its ability to "disengage" the seats from the main cable line.
Faster, more comfortable chairlifts
This means that the seats can be slowed down to embark and disembark passengers, then accelerated to cruise speed once they are moving along the main track.

At the start, the seats are slowed down or even stopped to allow skiers to sit comfortably.
This is often achieved using a conveyor or moving platform to help synchronise the movement of passengers with that of the arriving seat.

Once the passengers are seated and the chairlift has left the departure station, it gradually accelerates to its cruising speed, which is considerably higher than that of a fixed-grip chairlift.
This acceleration is achieved by a system of pulleys and special mechanisms that "reconnect" the seat to the main cable.
During the journey, the detachable chairlift moves quickly, significantly reducing ascent times compared with fixed systems.
Expensive chairlifts reduce waiting times
This increases the efficiency of the lift and means that more skiers can be transported in less time, reducing waiting times.
As you approach the finish station, the chairlift disengages again from the main cable, slowing down the chairs for a safe disembarkation.
Systems similar to those used for boarding are used to facilitate this operation.

The system requires more complex technology and regular maintenance to ensure its safety and efficiency.
But since their introduction, detachable chairlifts have represented a significant advance in ski lift technology.
These offer a better user experience while maximising the operational efficiency of ski resorts.
