Bourg Saint Maurice - Les Arcs - You have to look up, follow the ridges, pass the wooded edge and climb even higher until you reach the Transarc. Up there, between wooden footbridges and banked bends, a brand new playground has been created for the summer of 2025: a three-kilometre long Mountain Kart track, designed to take you down the mountain in a whole new way. We tested this activity for you, which combines sliding, speed... and lots of laughs.
At Arc 1800, the start area comes alive at 10am. A helmet, a quick briefing and off you go for a downhill ride, seated low to the ground, at the wheel of an oversized, stable tricycle, without pedals or engine, but with real thrills.
The wide, low machine hugs the curves of the trail perfectly. And from the very first bends, it's easy to see why this activity is such a hit.
A discipline on the rise... and on a gentle slope
Ludovic Bayon has been a Mountain Kart instructor in Les Arcs for four seasons. He has seen the activity grow and appeal to an ever-widening audience. "Mountain Karting arrived here six years ago. It's a great introduction to mountain activities, a good compromise between leisure and thrills, accessible to everyone from the age of 12.
Up until this summer, enthusiasts only took the Villards piste: 1.1 km, a few chicanes, a nice overview. But the big news in 2025 is changing all that. From the Transarc, a new 3km route has just opened: longer, more challenging, with zigzags, hills, wooden footbridges and an unobstructed view of the whole valley.
"We tripled the distance and added 400 metres of vertical drop. It's smoother, you have time to look at the scenery, play with the trajectory... The feedback is very positive, especially for families and those looking for a slightly less technical descent". smiles Ludovic.
More stable than a mountain bike, as much fun as a summer sledge
The Mountain Kart is the missing link between children's bikes and downhill mountain biking. "It's more stable and reassuring for those who haven't yet tried mountain biking. You sit firmly on the ground, no jumping, no pedalling. But the adrenalin is there". explains the instructor.
And indeed, as soon as you let off the brakes, it's all over. The bends become little challenges, the bumps a reason to laugh, and the terrain an ally rather than an obstacle.
You can do it on your own, with friends or family. And there are plenty of combinations to choose from: one run to discover, two to challenge yourself, three to keep you coming back for more. The combo package between Villards and Transarc is ideal for two levels of skiing in one day.
