The ski resort called Homeland opened in January 2023 in the heart of the Italian Alps, near the village of Montespluga.
It's a first in Europe. A ski resort without... ski lifts!
Skiers can enjoy 11 signposted ascent routes, based on the ski touring modelYou'll be able to climb the slopes before enjoying a free descent over a vast 36km² off-piste area.
The resort is focusing on safety by providing complete kits, including touring skis, splitboards, backpacks equipped with avalanche transceivers, four-season sleeping bags and a shovel.
No ski lifts, but slopes to climb
In order to replace the ski lifts, the Italian resort's official website states that the entire area surrounding Montespluga "It's a huge slope to climb up and down, either on your own or accompanied by Alpine guides".
The initiative is the brainchild of Tommaso Lazzuna and Paolo Pichielo, two skiing enthusiasts who took advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to develop this new concept. For these two pioneers, the project offers a more sustainable alternative to more traditional resorts.
