Le Petit Montagnard presents a few essential tips to follow on your mountain excursions.
1. Comply with Local Regulations
Before setting off, find out about local rules, particularly those concerning bivouacs. Some areas are protected, and camping there can harm the flora and fauna. Always favour authorised bivouac areas, often indicated by signs or local guides. This not only helps to respect nature, but also avoids fines.
2. Protecting local flora
It's tempting to pick wildflowers in the mountains, but it's crucial to resist. Many species, such as edelweiss and gentian, are protected. Picking them can jeopardise their survival in already vulnerable ecosystems. Just admire the beauty of these plants and leave them untouched so that others can enjoy them too.
3. Preserving Aquatic Ecosystems
High altitude lakes are sensitive habitats for many aquatic species. Avoid swimming in them, even if the water looks clean and refreshing. Simply entering them can upset the ecological balance by stirring up sediment or introducing foreign substances. Preserve these ecosystems to maintain local biodiversity.
4. Avoiding Campfires
Making a campfire is a tradition in the mountains, but it can seriously damage the soil and surrounding vegetation. Mountain soils are often shallow and fragile, and fire can leave lasting scars. Instead, use a portable stove for cooking, which leaves no trace and limits the risk of fire.
5. Bring back all your rubbish
Even organic waste, such as fruit peelings, can have a negative impact on the mountain environment. It attracts animals, disrupting their natural diet. Take all your rubbish with you and dispose of it in the appropriate bins on the way down. This simple gesture will ensure that the mountains remain clean and pleasant for everyone.
