Perched at 2,188 metres, straddling the Franco-Italian border, the Hospice du Petit-Saint-Bernard (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hautetarentaise.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haute Tarentaise<\/a>has watched over the pass for nearly a thousand years. In the spirit of Saint Bernard, who established his hospices on the borders of the Alps. One here, between France and Italy, the other between Italy and Switzerland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the origins of the site go back even further: originally built near the old Roman caravanserai, east of the pass, the building has its roots in the 6th century, before being rebuilt in its current location in the early 12th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Situated on a strategic transalpine route, the hospice had a dual purpose: spiritual and hospitable. It offered lodging and food to pedlars, pilgrims, and merchants exhausted by the crossing. A notable difference with its elder sibling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Destroyed by wars, left to ruin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u00abThe one at the Great St Bernard is open all year round, there are still monks. It has often been bombed, plundered, and destroyed,\u00bb summarises the person in charge of reception. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wars and fires have ravaged it several times, but it has always been rebuilt to maintain its purpose. The Mauritian Order agreed to finance half of the work initially.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> The remainder will be borne by the European Community and the French and Italian public authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/petit-montagnard.fr\/en\/a-gourmet-stop-and-a-cosy-nest-in-haute-tarentaise-the-manager-of-the-hospice-du-petit-saint-bernard-has-opened-her-doors-to-us\/\">\u00abGourmet stop,\u00bb \u00abcosy nest\u00bb: in Haute Tarentaise, the manager of the refuge-restaurant at the Hospice du Petit Saint-Bernard opened her doors to us<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the Savoie General Council\u2019s \u00abGreen Passes\u00bb operation, the project plans to develop, floor by floor, an information centre, an exhibition space for Savoyard and Aosta Valley products, a mountain pass museum, a stopover guesthouse, and even a European meeting space. This is a long-term undertaking, constrained by the altitude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An awakening wing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u00abThe work could not be carried out during the summers.\u00bb<\/em> precise Lou Julien. Reopened in 1995, the hospice has thus grown in stages. <em>\u00abI've been here for over twenty seasons. Today, only part of the building has been fitted out. The equivalent remains to be restored on the other side. <em>\u00abThat wing is still under design.\u00bb <\/em>The dream? <em>\u00abOpen even in winter\u00bb<\/em> and gaining capacity in the summer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the mountain imposes its limits: avalanche zones and strong winds make access difficult. A fine ambition remains. <em>\u00abWe have an exhibition hall that could be even better utilised, by creating a beautiful gallery.\u00bb <\/em>To write, one day, a new chapter in this millennial story.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has seen centuries and travellers come and go.
