What if, for Haute Tarentaise up to Aoste, a city founded by the Romans and rich in architectural treasures. On the agenda: a guided crossing of a legendary pass, the colourful market in the old town, and a good dose of transalpine relaxation.

«The idea is to organise a discovery itinerary between Tarentaise and the Aosta Valley.» Jean-Marie Chevronnet, a tour guide and head of heritage and culture at the Arcs tourist office.

The unique aspect of this excursion, born from a partnership between the Community of Communes and the Arcs Tourist Office, lies in its guidance. A guide-lecturer takes charge of the group from Bourg-Saint-Maurice and only leaves them in Aoste.

«There are comments on history, heritage, landscape, know-how and traditions.» detailed Jean-Marie Chevronnet. To highlight the particularities of the two sides, both on the Tarentaise and Val d'Aosta sides, all along the route.

Upon arrival, it's time for freedom. As the departure falls on market day, travellers can stroll through the streets of the old town in the late morning, a local speciality in hand.

Then, in the early afternoon, an optional visit – but included in the package – takes those who wish to discover the Collegiate Church of Saint-Ours. «It is one of the oldest buildings in the Aosta Valley.» Highlight the guide. A building from the year 1000, where Romanesque and Gothic transition and Renaissance décor mingle.

The return journey is also experienced as a stage in its own right. In the late afternoon, the bus stops at the Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass, allowing time to take in the panorama of the Tarentaise Valley and discover the famous hospice.

«This is where the light is at its most beautiful, both for taking photos and for discovery.» Jean-Marie Chevronnet slid. A final, luminous stop before descending back into the valley, with a head full of images.

Find out more :

Et si, le temps d’une journée, on troquait les sommets savoyards pour les terrasses italiennes ?
