The craziest winter adventure can be found in the Pyrenees

Between ice, rock and white water, Saint-Lary-Soulan (Pyrenees) offers an extraordinary winter adventure. With helmets on their heads and full-body neoprene on their backs, the most daredevil climbers set off into a snow-covered canyon for an icy experience of abseiling, translucent pools and frozen waterfalls. It's a raw, spectacular experience, far from the beaten track.

In the Pyrenees, when the mountains freeze under the frost, some people choose not to stay on the slopes.

In Saint-Lary, a handful of adventurers are swapping skis and snowshoes for a full neoprene suit, a balaclava pulled tightly around their face and a well-fitting harness.

Head for a canyon nestling in the foothills of the Mont-Perdu massif, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for a truly unique experience.

The scenery is immediately striking. Partially frozen waterfalls form natural sculptures, snow covers the banks and the water is always strikingly clear.

From the first few metres, it's clear that there's much more to the experience than a simple water ride. Snow slides, icy pools, abseiling, zip lines and optional jumps - from one to six metres - punctuate your progress.

Each passage requires commitment and concentration, and each pause offers a moment of suspended contemplation of the canyon's raw beauty.

Supervised by local professionals, the activity takes place over half a day, generally between 1pm and 3pm, with an immersion in the water of 1h30 to 2h depending on the pace of the group.

Everything is provided on site: full wetsuit with balaclava, helmet, neoprene booties, self-draining bag, waterproof canteen, harness and ropes. All you have to do is let yourself be guided.

Available for children aged 10 and over, 50 euros for half a day
